Study in Spain for Indian Students
Public Master's fees set by each region, €600 a month (IPREM) in funds, up to 30 hours of work a week since 2025 and a 24-month job-search permit — planning a Master's in Spain.
Spain is drawing more Indian students each year thanks to moderate public-university fees, a growing number of English-taught Master's programmes and cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia with strong business, technology and tourism sectors. Universities and business schools offer postgraduate courses in management, data science, engineering, international relations and hospitality.
This guide covers how studying in Spain works for students from India: official Master's degrees, public and private universities, popular courses, tuition and living costs, admission requirements, intakes, scholarships, the national student visa and the rules that now let students work up to 30 hours a week.
Why Study in Spain?
- Moderate fees at public universities: Official Master's degrees at public universities are priced per credit by each region, usually well below UK or US tuition — though non-EU students often pay a higher rate.
- Work up to 30 hours a week: Since May 2025, higher-education students can work up to 30 hours a week without applying for a separate work permit, as long as the job is compatible with their studies.
- Post-study job-search permit: Graduates of Spanish universities can apply for a residence permit of up to 24 months to look for work or start a business.
- Leading business schools: Spain is home to internationally known business schools and private universities offering English-taught MSc and MBA programmes.
- EU degree and Schengen mobility: Official Spanish degrees are part of the European Higher Education Area, and a Spanish student permit allows short trips within the Schengen area.
Masters in Spain for Indian Students
An official Master's degree in Spain (Máster Universitario) carries 60 to 120 ECTS credits, so most last one year and some two, ending with a Master's thesis (Trabajo Fin de Máster). Universities also offer their own non-official degrees (títulos propios), which can be useful but are not recognised in the same way — check which type you are applying for.
Admission is decided by each university, often through an online pre-registration (preinscripción) in several phases. Universities assess whether your Indian bachelor's degree gives access to postgraduate study and how closely it matches the programme. Documents usually need an apostille and, for Spanish-taught courses, an official translation.
Many programmes, especially in business, data science and engineering, are taught fully or partly in English and ask for IELTS, TOEFL or a similar test. Spanish-taught programmes normally require Spanish at around B2 level (for example DELE). The GRE is rarely required, while some business schools ask for the GMAT or their own admission test.
- Typical duration: 1 year (60 ECTS); some 1.5–2 years
- Main intake: September / October; limited February starts
- English tests: IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT or equivalent
- Proof of funds: 100% of IPREM — €600 per month (2026)
- Work while studying: Up to 30 hours a week, compatible with studies
- Work after study: Job-search permit of up to 24 months
