Lincoln American University Guyana — MD Fees & Admission 2026
Lincoln American University School of Medicine sits at Water and Barrack Street, Kingston, Georgetown, and awards a Doctor of Medicine (MD) rather than an MBBS. Guyana is on the South American mainland rather than in the Caribbean island group, although it is English-speaking and part of CARICOM — this page sits under our Caribbean grouping for historical URL reasons, not because Georgetown is an island. The university publishes a five-year MD for Indian students (a pre-medical year, two years of basic sciences and two years of clinical sciences) and a four-year MD for international applicants who already hold a BSc. Clinical rotations are published as taking place in Guyana and the United States, and cost an extra US$100 a week for 88 weeks.
Tuition is published as US$13,000 in the first year and US$8,000 a year thereafter, totalling US$45,000 for the five-year programme, with fees due before each semester begins. Accommodation is published at US$3,600 a year and mess charges at US$125 a month.
The university states that NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian students and that eligibility criteria for NEET must be fulfilled as laid down by the competent authorities, and that the complete five-year programme is conducted in Guyana. For international students, it says clinical rotations are available in Nepal, India and the USA where approved by the applicant's home medical council.

Why choose Lincoln American University?
What the university itself publishes, and what it means for the cost:
- A Fully Published Fee Schedule: LAU publishes tuition year by year — US$13,000 for the first year and US$8,000 a year for years two to five, US$45,000 in total — plus accommodation at US$3,600 a year, mess at US$125 a month, clinical rotations at US$100 a week for 88 weeks and US electives at US$350 a week. Few schools in the region publish this much.
- English-Speaking Country: Guyana is the only country in South America with English as its official language, so there is no local-language barrier on campus or with patients during Guyanese rotations.
- Registered With Guyana's National Accreditation Council: The university states it is registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana, with Pre-Medical Sciences and Doctor of Medicine among its approved programmes. Ask for the current registration certificate for your intake year.
- NEET Stated As Mandatory By The University Itself: LAU's own admission page states that NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian students — it is not only India's rule but the university's stated requirement, which makes the paperwork cleaner.
- Rotations In Guyana And The United States: The MD programme page states that clinical rotations occur in Guyana and the United States at accredited medical facilities, with USMLE electives in the USA available at US$350 a week.
- Recognition To Confirm Before You Pay: Course structure, recognition and admission requirements are set by the university and by the regulator in its own country, and should be confirmed in writing for your intake year before you apply.

Source: the university's own finance page (laumed.org/finance), read on 26 September 2026. Eligibility criteria
What LAU publishes for Indian and international applicants:
- NEET-UG (Indian applicants): The university states that "NEET qualification is mandatory and eligibility criteria for NEET have to be fulfilled as laid down by competent authorities". India's NMC requires it in any case for an Indian national studying medicine abroad.
- Academic Qualification: A completed Higher Secondary / 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology, and English, for the five-year programme.
- Graduate Entry (4-Year MD): A Bachelor of Science degree, for the international four-year route.
- International Applicants: Must meet the requirements of the medical council of their own country. LAU states clinical rotations are available in Nepal, India and the USA where approved by that council.
- Financial Capability: A sponsor's bank statement for the last three months showing a minimum balance of US$7,000.
- Minimum Marks: LAU does not publish a percentage threshold on the pages checked. Get the academic cut-off for your intake in writing.
Admission process 2026
The six-step route LAU publishes:
- Submit the application form with your high school certificates, passport scan and a photograph.
- On receiving the offer, accept it within 15 days and pay 25% of the fees in advance.
- Submit the supporting documents: transcripts, medical fitness certificate, police clearance, sponsor letter and the last three months' bank statements showing a minimum of US$7,000.
- Apply for the Guyana student visa — LAU says the process takes about one month — and pay the remaining 75% of tuition.
- Book flights once the visa is issued.
- Complete registration in Georgetown and begin studies. Ask for the fee schedule, the NAC Guyana registration certificate and your cohort's rotation plan in writing before you remit the balance.
Documents required
The documents LAU's admission pages call for:
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates
- Official NEET-UG scorecard — stated by the university as mandatory for Indian applicants
- Valid passport
- Official acceptance letter from the LAU admissions committee
- Medical fitness certificate and Yellow Fever vaccination certificate
- Police clearance certificate
- Sponsor's bank statement for the last three months, minimum balance US$7,000
- Official sponsorship letter
- Passport-size photographs
- Degree transcripts and BSc certificate, if applying for the four-year MD
Hostel & accommodation
LAU publishes accommodation and mess charges against the first year of the five-year programme:
- Accommodation: US$3,600 per year, as published on the university's finance page for the first year.
- Mess Charges: US$125 per month, as published on the same page for the first year. Menu and catering details are not published — confirm rather than assume.
- Years Two To Five: The finance page lists accommodation and mess against the first year only. Ask the university in writing what housing is provided and what it costs in each later year, including during clinical rotations.
- What To Get In Writing: Room type and occupancy, whether a place is guaranteed, the deposit, what utilities are included, and who bills you — the university or a third party.
Clinical training
LAU publishes the clinical phase as follows, and it carries a separate per-week charge:
- Clinical rotations take place in Guyana and the United States, at what the university describes as accredited medical facilities.
- Rotations are charged at US$100 per week for a duration of 88 weeks, on top of tuition.
- Elective rotations of the student's own choice in the USA are priced at US$350 per week.
- For international students, LAU states rotations may be arranged in Nepal, India or the USA where the applicant's home medical council approves.
- USMLE coaching and training are described as integrated through the programme.
- Ask specifically whether your course includes a 12-month internship at the same institution, which India's FMGL Regulations, 2021 require of an Indian student who wants to register in India.
Recognition & accreditation
The National Medical Commission states that it "does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course", so no foreign medical university is "NMC approved". What decides your eligibility to register in India is the course you take. What LAU itself publishes, and what we could and could not confirm on 26 September 2026:
- LAU states it is registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana (NAC), with Pre-Medical Sciences and Doctor of Medicine among its list of approved programmes. Ask for the current NAC certificate, with its expiry date, in writing.
- LAU states it is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by FAIMER (quoting FAIMER School ID F0004722). A World Directory listing records that a school exists — it is not an accreditation, a recognition or an endorsement. Look the entry up yourself at wdoms.org.
- LAU describes itself as "certified and approved by ECFMG". ECFMG certifies individual graduates rather than schools, so treat this as the university's wording: check the school's World Directory entry for a current ECFMG Sponsor Note, and ask which WFME-recognised agency accredits the programme under Intealth's Recognized Accreditation Policy, and until when.
- LAU also states it holds memberships or recognitions from AMEE and GAME, and that it was "impaneled by the erstwhile" Medical Council of India. The MCI was dissolved in 2020 and any MCI-era impanelment carries no current weight with the NMC — do not treat it as Indian recognition.
- Lincoln American University does not appear in CAAM-HP's register of assessed programmes, although other Guyanese schools do. That is not itself a disqualification, because Guyana's NAC is the national body, but it does mean CAAM-HP has not assessed this programme.
- Check the course against the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 — at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, and English as the medium of instruction throughout.
- Confirm the university is registered with the body competent to grant a licence to practise medicine in Guyana, on the same terms as Guyana's own graduates.
Career opportunities
An MD from Guyana opens licensing routes; it does not settle any of them:
- To practise in India you must meet the NMC's FMGL Regulations, 2021, pass the screening examination and complete a further 12 months of supervised internship in India.
- For the United States, eligibility runs through ECFMG certification and the USMLE. Confirm the school's current standing under Intealth's Recognized Accreditation Policy before you rely on that route.
- The UK's UKMLA/PLAB pathway, Canadian licensing and the AMC in Australia each set their own eligibility rules. The university publishes no guarantee about any of them, and neither does this page.
Student life
The campus sits in Kingston, on Georgetown's waterfront:
- A Georgetown location at Water and Barrack Street, within reach of the city's markets, banks and pharmacies.
- An English-speaking country, so patient interaction during Guyanese rotations is in English.
- An international student body, with the university operating administrative support for Indian applicants.
Lincoln American University (LAU Caribbean) — frequently asked questions
What is the tuition fee at Lincoln American University?
The university's finance page publishes US$13,000 for the first year and US$8,000 a year for years two to five, giving US$45,000 in total tuition for the five-year MD, with fees due before each semester starts. The page does not name an academic session, so confirm in writing that these rates apply to your intake.
What is excluded from that US$45,000?
Clinical rotations, charged separately at US$100 per week for 88 weeks — roughly US$8,800 across the programme — and elective rotations in the USA at US$350 per week. Accommodation at US$3,600 a year and mess charges at US$125 a month are also separate, and are published against the first year only. Airfare, visa and residence-permit costs, health insurance, books and personal expenses are not published at all. You must also show a sponsor's bank statement with a minimum balance of US$7,000.
Is Lincoln American University NMC approved?
No foreign medical university holds "NMC approved" status — the National Medical Commission states that it "does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course". The university's own claim to have been "impaneled by the erstwhile" Medical Council of India carries no current weight: the MCI was dissolved in 2020. What decides Indian registration is whether the course meets the FMGL Regulations, 2021 — at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution and English throughout — followed by the screening examination and a further 12 months of supervised internship in India.
Is NEET compulsory for Indian students at LAU?
Yes, and the university says so itself. LAU's admission page states that NEET qualification is mandatory and that NEET eligibility criteria must be fulfilled as laid down by the competent authorities. India's NMC requires it in any case of any Indian national studying medicine abroad who wants to register in India.
What are the eligibility requirements?
For the five-year MD, a completed Higher Secondary / 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology plus English, and a qualified NEET-UG score for Indian applicants. For the four-year MD, a Bachelor of Science degree. All applicants must show a sponsor's bank statement for the last three months with a minimum balance of US$7,000. The university does not publish a percentage cut-off on the pages checked, so get it in writing.
How long is the course and what degree is awarded?
LAU awards a Doctor of Medicine (MD), not an MBBS. For Indian students it runs five years — a one-year pre-medical phase, two years of basic sciences and two years of clinical sciences — and the university states the complete five-year programme is conducted in Guyana. Applicants who already hold a BSc can take the four-year route: two years of basic sciences and a two-year clinical component.
Where do LAU students do their clinical rotations?
The MD programme page states rotations occur in Guyana and the United States at accredited medical facilities, charged at US$100 a week for 88 weeks. Electives in the USA cost US$350 a week. For international students, the admission page adds that rotations may be arranged in Nepal, India or the USA where the applicant's own medical council approves. Ask for the named hospitals and your cohort's rotation plan in writing.
Is Lincoln American University in the Caribbean or in South America?
Georgetown is in Guyana, on the South American mainland — not in the Caribbean island group. Guyana is English-speaking and a CARICOM member, which is why Guyanese schools are often marketed as Caribbean, and this page sits under our Caribbean grouping for URL reasons. If you are comparing island-based Caribbean schools, factor in that Guyana is a different jurisdiction with its own regulator, the National Accreditation Council of Guyana.
What is the admission process?
Submit the application form with your high school certificates, passport scan and photograph. Accept the offer within 15 days and pay 25% of the fees. Then submit transcripts, a medical fitness certificate, police clearance, sponsor letter and three months' bank statements showing at least US$7,000. Apply for the Guyana student visa — the university says it takes about a month — and pay the remaining 75%. Book flights once the visa is issued and complete registration in Georgetown.
What documents do I need?
Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates, your NEET-UG scorecard, a valid passport, the LAU acceptance letter, a medical fitness certificate and Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, a police clearance certificate, a sponsor's bank statement for three months with a minimum balance of US$7,000, an official sponsorship letter, and passport-size photographs. Four-year MD applicants also need degree transcripts and the BSc certificate.
Does LAU provide accommodation and food?
The university's finance page publishes accommodation at US$3,600 a year and mess charges at US$125 a month, but lists both against the first year only. Menu and catering details are not published, so confirm them in writing rather than relying on a description of Indian and Continental meals. Ask specifically what housing is provided and what it costs in years two to five, including during clinical rotations.
