Why choose Volgograd State Medical University?
VolgSMU publishes more of the numbers an international applicant needs than most Russian universities do. Here is what you can check for yourself:
- A declared English-taught General Medicine stream: The university's tariff order lists "31.05.01 Лечебное дело (специалитет) 6 лет (с преподаванием на английском языке) 1-6 курсы" as a separate priced programme, so the English stream is a formally constituted course rather than an informal arrangement.
- One tuition figure for all six years: For students entering in 2026-2027 the English-taught tariff is 480,000 roubles a year for years 1 to 6, which makes the course cost easy to plan. Students who entered in earlier years pay different amounts under a separate order.
- Hostel prices published in the same order: Appendix 4 to order No. 174-КО prices each hostel for international students for 2026-2027, so accommodation is not an open-ended cost.
- The order states what tuition excludes: It says in terms that the hostel, voluntary medical insurance, the medical examination and any intermediary firm's commission are not included in tuition — useful when you compare an agent's all-in quote.

Volgograd State Medical University fee structure
The figures below come from VolgSMU's own order for foreign citizens entering in 2026-2027. Tuition is charged in roubles and paid at a bank or at the university's cash desk.
Source: the university's published tariff for 2026-2027 at volgmed.ru — rector's order No. 174-КО of 28.01.2026 "Об организации обучения иностранных граждан в 2026-2027 учебном году", appendix 3 (tuition for foreign citizens entering on a contract basis) and appendix 4 (hostel charges: 80,000 RUB/year for hostel No. 1 second floor, 60,000 RUB/year for hostel No. 1 floors 3-5 and 105,000 RUB/year for hostel No. 4). The order states that tuition excludes any stipend, the hostel, voluntary medical insurance paid separately to an insurer, the medical examination and any commission charged by intermediary firms; meals, travel and personal costs are also excluded. Tariffs are re-issued annually, so ask for the order that will apply to your intake. There is no official rupee figure — your rupee cost depends on the exchange rate on the day each instalment is paid.

Eligibility criteria
Two sets of rules apply: VolgSMU's own admission requirements, and the Indian rules that decide whether you can register to practise after you graduate.
- Academic Qualification: 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology
- Minimum Marks (Indian rule): 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (40% for reserved categories), as required by India's National Medical Commission for an Eligibility Certificate
- NEET-UG (Indian rule): A qualifying NEET-UG score is required of Indian citizens by the NMC before studying medicine abroad
- Age (Indian rule): At least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year
- Language: Confirm with the international admissions office what English level it expects for the English-taught stream
- Passport: A valid international passport with substantial remaining validity
Admission process 2026
Admission runs through the university's international admissions office, which issues the invitation you need for a Russian student visa.
- Apply to the VolgSMU international admissions office, stating whether you want the English-taught or the Russian-taught stream — they are priced differently.
- Send scans of your passport and education documents for assessment, and obtain your NMC Eligibility Certificate on the Indian side.
- Receive the university's invitation, issued through the Russian migration authorities.
- Apply for a Russian student visa at a Russian embassy or consulate.
- Sign the contract and pay the tuition instalment in roubles at a bank or the university's cash desk.
- Travel to Volgograd, complete migration registration, take out medical insurance and the required medical examination, and begin classes.
Documents required
Prepare the following before you apply. Indian documents normally need legalisation or apostille and a certified Russian translation — confirm the exact requirement with the university.
- Valid international passport
- Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and mark sheets
- NEET-UG scorecard
- NMC Eligibility Certificate (Indian applicants)
- Birth certificate and proof of nationality
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Medical reports and health clearance documents
- The signed university contract
Hostel & accommodation
VolgSMU prices its hostels for international students in the same annual order that sets tuition, so the cost is known before you arrive. Accommodation is not included in tuition.
- Hostel No. 1, 18 KIM Street (2nd floor): 80,000 RUB per year (2026-2027)
- Hostel No. 1, 18 KIM Street (floors 3-5): 60,000 RUB per year (2026-2027)
- Hostel No. 4, 8 Hiroshima Street: 105,000 RUB per year (2026-2027)
- How it is paid: In roubles at a bank or at the VolgSMU cash desk
- Not included: Meals, medical insurance and the medical examination are charged separately from both tuition and the hostel
- Allocation: Ask the international office which hostel your cohort is placed in before you budget — the three rates differ by 45,000 RUB a year
Clinical training
Clinical subjects are taught on hospital and clinic bases in Volgograd. Confirm the arrangements for your cohort with the faculty.
- Clinical rotations in surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and internal medicine run in the later years of the six-year course.
- Ask which hospitals your group is placed in and in which language ward rounds and patient interviews are conducted, since patients in Volgograd speak Russian.
- English-stream students can take an additional professionally oriented Russian course of 108 academic hours for 25,000 roubles, which exists precisely because ward work needs Russian.
- If you intend to register in India, check how the final year sits against the NMC's requirement for a 12-month internship at the same institution.
Recognition & accreditation
The National Medical Commission states that it "does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course", so no foreign medical university is "NMC approved". What decides your eligibility to register in India is the course you take. Verify the following directly with the university, in writing:
- VolgSMU's own "Основные сведения" page names the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation as its founder; ask the university for its current licence and state accreditation documents.
- Check the course against the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 — at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, and English as the medium of instruction throughout. VolgSMU prices a distinct English-taught stream, so make sure your contract names that stream and confirm the medium of instruction for every year.
- Confirm the university is registered with the body competent to grant a licence to practise medicine in its own country, on the same terms as that country's own graduates.
- Look the university up yourself in the World Directory of Medical Schools (wdoms.org). A listing records that a school exists — it is not an accreditation, a recognition or an endorsement.
Career opportunities
What you can do with the degree depends on the licensing rules of the country you want to work in, not on the university:
- To practise in India you must meet the NMC's FMGL Regulations, 2021, pass the screening examination and complete a further 12 months of supervised internship in India.
- Other licensing routes — USMLE in the United States, PLAB in the United Kingdom, AMC in Australia — set their own eligibility rules that you should check with those regulators directly.
- VolgSMU prices clinical residency (ординатура) and postgraduate programmes for foreign citizens in the same annual order, mostly taught in Russian.
Student life
Practical points to check with the university before you arrive:
- Voluntary medical insurance is compulsory in practice and is paid separately to an insurance company, not to the university.
- A medical examination on arrival is charged separately from tuition.
- Extra tuition outside timetabled classes is priced by the hour — 390 roubles in Russian, 580 roubles in English under the 2026-2027 order.
- No stipend is paid to students on contract places.

Tariffs are re-issued annually, so confirm the figures for your intake in writing.
Is the MBBS programme at VolgSMU taught in English?
Yes — the university's own tariff order lists "Лечебное дело (специалитет) 6 лет (с преподаванием на английском языке)" as a separate priced programme for foreign citizens, with 65 paid places for 2026-2027. Russian is still needed for patient contact, which is why the university offers English-stream students an additional 108-hour professional Russian course for 25,000 roubles.
How much is the hostel at VolgSMU?
For 2026-2027 the university prices hostel No. 1 at 18 KIM Street at 80,000 roubles a year on the second floor and 60,000 roubles a year on floors 3-5, and hostel No. 4 at 8 Hiroshima Street at 105,000 roubles a year. It is paid in roubles at a bank or the university cash desk and is not included in tuition.
Is NEET required for admission to VolgSMU?
Yes, for Indian students. India's National Medical Commission requires a qualifying NEET-UG score and an Eligibility Certificate before an Indian citizen studies medicine abroad. It is an Indian regulatory requirement rather than a VolgSMU entrance exam.
What are the eligibility criteria for Indian students at VolgSMU?
You need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and a valid passport. The 50% aggregate in PCB (40% for reserved categories), the NEET-UG qualification and the minimum age of 17 by 31 December of the admission year come from India's NMC rules. Ask the international admissions office what English level it expects for the English-taught stream.

Six years. The university's tariff order describes Лечебное дело (31.05.01) as a six-year full-time specialist programme, covering courses 1 to 6 and ending in the Russian state final attestation.
How do I apply for admission at VolgSMU?
Apply to the international admissions office, saying which stream you want, and send scans of your passport and education documents. Obtain your NMC Eligibility Certificate in India, wait for the university's invitation to be issued through the Russian migration authorities, apply for a student visa at a Russian mission, sign the contract and pay in roubles, then complete migration registration and the medical examination in Volgograd.
What documents are required for VolgSMU admission?
A valid international passport, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and mark sheets, your NEET-UG scorecard, an NMC Eligibility Certificate, birth certificate and proof of nationality, passport-size photographs, medical reports and health clearance documents, and the signed university contract. Indian documents normally need legalisation or apostille and a certified Russian translation.
When does the intake start at VolgSMU?
The Russian academic year begins on 1 September. VolgSMU sets its own application window for international applicants each year and its admission plan for 2026-2027 was approved in January 2026 — ask the international admissions office for this year's closing dates, because the invitation and visa steps take time.
