Why choose Wuhan University School of Medicine?

What Wuhan University's own admissions pages actually document for international applicants:

  • On the Ministry of Education's English-MBBS list: Wuhan University (武汉大学) appears on the Ministry of Education's list of universities commissioned to enrol English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine students from abroad, with 50 places in the 2023-2024 notice — the most recent list published on moe.gov.cn. Places are limited, so apply early.
  • Clinical Medicine is one of only four English-medium undergraduate courses: The university's English-medium undergraduate list contains Clinical Medicine, Software Engineering, Management and Economics, so the medical course is a deliberate offering rather than a bolt-on.
  • Published, itemised fees: The university publishes a single fee table covering tuition, the application fee, insurance, the physical examination, residence permit, textbooks and living costs, and a room-by-room apartment fee table — which makes it easy to check any figure an agent quotes.
  • The final training year may be completed abroad: The university states that the last year of resident physician training can be completed in another country, provided you give Wuhan University an internship certificate from a qualified medical institution. Check how that interacts with India's rule that the 12-month internship be at the same institution.
  • Be clear-eyed about the Chinese requirement: Basic medicine courses are taught in English, but you cannot enter the clinical stage until you pass HSK level 3, and from the second semester of year three clinical courses are bilingual, Chinese plus English. Students who fail HSK 3 must pay for Chinese lessons until they pass.

Clinical training

How the clinical part of the course is organised, according to the university:

  • Five semesters of clinical courses and internship placements follow the five semesters of basic medicine.
  • Students may only enter the clinical stage, which starts in the second semester of year three, after passing HSK level 3; clinical courses from then on are taught bilingually in Chinese and English.
  • Clinical teaching takes place in Wuhan University's affiliated hospitals, which include Renmin (People's) Hospital and Zhongnan Hospital.
  • The final year is two semesters of resident physician training, which the university allows to be completed in another country if you provide an internship certificate from a qualified medical institution.

Recognition & accreditation

The National Medical Commission states that it "does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course", so no foreign medical university is "NMC approved". What decides your eligibility to register in India is the course you take. Verify the following directly with the university, in writing:

  • Wuhan University (武汉大学) appears on the Ministry of Education's list of universities commissioned to enrol English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine students from abroad, with 50 places in the 2023-2024 notice (教外厅函〔2023〕10号, moe.gov.cn). The Ministry updates this list each year — ask the university for written confirmation that it is on the list for your intake year.
  • The same notice states that universities not on the list may not enrol English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine students from abroad and may not issue an English-language degree certificate bearing "MBBS".
  • Two points need explicit written answers before you commit: the course becomes bilingual (Chinese and English) from the second semester of year three, and the final training year may be completed outside Wuhan University. Both bear directly on the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021, which require English as the medium of instruction throughout and a 12-month internship at the same institution.
  • The 2026 admissions guide records the award as a bachelor's degree and graduation certificate. Ask in writing exactly how the degree certificate will be worded, because the NMC screens the primary medical qualification you actually hold.
  • Confirm the university is registered with the body competent to grant a licence to practise medicine in its own country, on the same terms as that country's own graduates.
  • Look the university up yourself in the World Directory of Medical Schools (wdoms.org). A listing records that a school exists — it is not an accreditation, a recognition or an endorsement.
