Lviv National Medical University (LNMU) — Fees & Admission

Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (LNMU) is a state medical university at 69 Pekarska Street in Lviv, western Ukraine, and it publishes more usable detail for foreign applicants than most Ukrainian universities. Its own 2026/2027 payment schedule sets English-medium Medicine at US$5,500 an academic year and US$33,000 for the whole course, with hostel accommodation at US$80 a month; its admission rules confirm a six-year Master's degree, entrance examinations in chemistry and the language of instruction, and a NEET certificate as the condition for Indian applicants. Everything else on this page is either from those documents or flagged as something you must confirm in writing. Ukraine is at war, and the practicalities have changed since 2022.

The university's Faculty of Foreign Students has taught international students since 1961 and teaches medicine, dentistry and pharmacy to foreigners in Ukrainian and in English, with English-medium teaching introduced in 1997. Contact: dep_foreign_students@lnmu.edu.ua.

Course structure, recognition and admission requirements are set by the university and by the regulator in its own country, and should be confirmed in writing for your intake year before you apply.

Why choose Lviv National Medical University?

What LNMU actually documents, and what it does not:

  • A published fee schedule for the coming academic year: LNMU publishes “Payment for study, hostel and additional services” for 2026/2027, with tuition per year and for the whole course, in English and in Ukrainian medium, plus the hostel rate and the charges for make-up classes and transcripts.
  • Written admission rules for foreign applicants: The university's “Admission Rules and Procedure for foreign citizens and stateless persons” sets out the documents, the entrance examinations, the invitation route through apply.studyinukraine.gov.ua and the temporary residence permit process.
  • Western Ukraine: Lviv is in the far west of the country. That is a matter of geography, not a safety guarantee — Lviv has been struck during the war. Ask the university directly how teaching is organised now.
  • The degree is a six-year Master's, not an MBBS: LNMU states the period of training for I2 Medicine as 6 years, awarding a Master's degree with the professional qualification of Doctor of Medicine. The internship is a separate postgraduate stage.
  • What LNMU does not publish: There is no current public statement on how much teaching is in person versus online, how air-raid alerts affect timetables, or how the postgraduate internship is arranged for foreign graduates. Get those answers in writing.
  • Course structure, recognition and admission requirements: These are set by the university and by the regulator in its own country, and should be confirmed in writing for your intake year before you apply.

MBBS course overview

LNMU admits foreign candidates to three accredited specialties, all full-time: I1 Dental Studies, I2 Medicine and I8 Pharmacy.

I2 Medicine leads to a Master's degree with the professional qualification of Doctor of Medicine over a stated period of training of 6 years. In Ukraine the internship is a separate postgraduate stage entered after the degree, which matters for the NMC's expectation of a 12-month internship at the same institution.

  • Degree: Master's degree in Medicine (specialty I2), professional qualification: Doctor of Medicine
  • Duration: 6 years (LNMU's own statement); the internship is a separate postgraduate stage
  • Medium of instruction: English or Ukrainian — priced separately in the payment schedule
  • Intake: Academic year starts 1 September. In the published rules, applications ran 1 June to 20 October, entrance tests 15 August to 30 October and enrolment by 1 November — confirm the current dates with the Faculty of Foreign Students.

Courses offered

  • I2 Medicine (Master's) — 6 years
  • I1 Dental Studies (Master's) — 5 years
  • I8 Pharmacy (Master's) — 5 years
  • Preparatory course (Ukrainian medium) — 1 year

Lviv National Medical University fee structure

These are LNMU's own published 2026/2027 figures for foreigners and stateless persons, English medium:

Source: “Payment for study in SNPC ‘Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University’ in 2026/2027 academic year for foreigners and stateless persons”, published by the university's Faculty of Foreign Students at vstup.meduniv.lviv.ua. English-medium Medicine (I2) is US$5,500 for one year and US$33,000 for the whole period of study; the same programme taught in Ukrainian is US$4,500 a year and US$27,000 in total. The schedule also lists higher “individual programme” rates of US$6,500 a year and US$39,000 in total for English-medium Medicine — ask which applies to you. Hostel accommodation is US$80 per month per person under the same schedule (an older hostel leaflet on the same site still shows US$65, so confirm the current rate in writing). Payment inside Ukraine is made in the hryvnia equivalent at the bank's rate on the day of payment; payment from abroad goes to the university's currency account in US dollars or the euro equivalent. Not included: compulsory medical insurance for the whole period of study, registration, meals, travel, translation and legalisation of documents, and the university's separate charges for making up missed classes (60/45/30 UAH per academic hour depending on the discipline) and for an academic transcript (33 UAH per page). First-year students must pay tuition and hostel for the whole year in full; from the second year payment may be made by semester.

  • 1st year (2026/27 schedule): US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month
  • 2nd year: US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month
  • 3rd year: US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month
  • 4th year: US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month
  • 5th year: US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month
  • 6th year: US$5,500 — hostel US$80/month

Eligibility criteria

Two sets of rules apply — LNMU's, and India's. You must satisfy both.

  • LNMU: NEET (Indian applicants): LNMU's admission rules state that admission of Indian entrants to medical institutions of higher education in Ukraine is carried out on condition of a certificate confirming successful completion of NEET.
  • LNMU: prior education: A complete secondary education certificate with transcripts, legalised or apostilled in the issuing country and translated into Ukrainian with notarised translation.
  • LNMU: entrance examinations: Taken after arrival in Lviv, in chemistry and in the language of instruction (English or Ukrainian).
  • LNMU: language preparation: Applicants who need Ukrainian can take a one-year preparatory course (intensive language plus chemistry, biology and physics) and are admitted to it without entrance examinations.
  • India (NMC): NEET-UG: A valid NEET-UG qualifying score is required for an Indian student to be eligible to register in India after a foreign medical degree.
  • India (NMC): FMGL Regulations, 2021: At least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution and English as the medium of instruction throughout, then the screening examination and a further 12 months of supervised internship in India. The NMC has also published notices on compensating online study, including one dated 18 March 2026 — read the current notices at nmc.org.in.

Admission process 2026

LNMU's published procedure for foreign citizens:

  • Email a copy of your international passport and a copy of your complete secondary education certificate with transcripts to dep_foreign_students@meduniv.lviv.ua for a preliminary recommendation.
  • Indian applicants also present the NEET certificate, which LNMU's rules treat as a condition of admission.
  • Once the Selection Commission gives a positive preliminary recommendation, create your own account at apply.studyinukraine.gov.ua and apply for an electronic invitation. LNMU tells applicants to search for the name SNPE “Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University”. The invitation is valid for no more than six months.
  • Apply for a Ukrainian student visa on the basis of the electronic invitation.
  • Tell the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Foreign Students your exact arrival date, time and route — the university must prepare letters for the Immigration Office and meet you.
  • On arrival, submit the full document file, sit the entrance examinations in chemistry and the language of instruction, and sign the Contract for Study with the rector.
  • Pay first-year tuition and hostel in full, plus medical insurance and registration; admission is complete only then. From the second year you may pay by semester.
  • Register with the State Migration Service for a temporary residence permit. LNMU warns that the documents must be submitted at least 15 working days before your visa expires, so arrive early.

Documents required

LNMU's published list of admission documents, submitted to the Faculty of Foreign Students:

  • Application to the rector requesting enrolment on a commercial basis
  • Completed application form
  • Invitation to study (original)
  • 2 copies of the inner pages of your passport
  • Education document and its appendix — original and a copy of each
  • Copy of birth certificate
  • Consent to personal data collection and processing
  • Results of a physical examination
  • Results of a laboratory test for HIV
  • 8 photographs, 3 x 4 cm
  • Copy of the health insurance policy
  • NEET certificate (Indian applicants)

Hostel & accommodation

LNMU publishes both a hostel rate and a description of what the hostels provide:

  • Cost: US$80 per month per person under the 2026/2027 payment schedule. An older hostel leaflet on the same site still quotes US$65 per month — confirm the current rate in writing before you pay.
  • Buildings: Four hostels, described by the university as not far from the main academic buildings.
  • Rooms: An apartment-style arrangement of two-bed and three-bed rooms with attached hygienic facilities; a common hall and a common kitchen on each floor.
  • Furnishing and services: Beds, mattresses, pillows, blankets, a cupboard, table and chair; weekly change of bed linen; hot water; central heating; plumber, carpenter and electrician on call.
  • Allocation: Competitive and first come, first served, subject to availability, under an annual contract with house rules including an 11 pm gate closing time. A place is not guaranteed — ask for confirmation in writing.
  • Other living costs: The university's own leaflet estimates private accommodation at US$150-300 per month. Meals are not included in any published figure.

Clinical training

LNMU teaches on clinical bases in Lviv and runs a University Hospital and a Dental Medical Centre. It does not publish a current statement on how clinical teaching is organised under war-time conditions, so put the following in writing before you commit:

  • Which hospitals and clinical bases your rotations would take place in, and whether they are operating normally.
  • How much of the course is currently delivered in person and how much online or blended — and whether any online delivery would later need to be compensated by physical onsite training for NMC purposes.
  • How the postgraduate internship would be arranged for a foreign graduate, where, for how long, and how it would be certified against the NMC's expectation of a 12-month internship at the same institution.
  • What happens to teaching and examinations during air-raid alerts and power interruptions.

Recognition & accreditation

The National Medical Commission states that it “does not endorse any list of Foreign Medical Institutions/ Universities for MBBS or equivalent course”, so no foreign medical university is “NMC approved”. What decides your eligibility to register in India is the course you take. Verify the following directly with the university, in writing:

  • LNMU is a Ukrainian state non-profit company (EDRPOU 02010793) and admits foreigners to the accredited specialties I1 Dental Studies, I2 Medicine and I8 Pharmacy. Enrolment is recorded in Ukraine's Unified State Electronic Database on Education (EDEBO).
  • Check the course against the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 — at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, and English as the medium of instruction throughout.
  • Ask in writing whether any part of your course would be delivered online, and read the NMC's current public notices on compensating online study at nmc.org.in.
  • Confirm the university is registered with the body competent to grant a licence to practise medicine in its own country, on the same terms as that country's own graduates.
  • Look the university up yourself in the World Directory of Medical Schools (wdoms.org). A listing records that a school exists — it is not an accreditation, a recognition or an endorsement.

Career opportunities

A Ukrainian Master's degree in Medicine does not by itself let you practise anywhere. Each country runs its own licensing route:

  • India: the NMC screening examination plus a further 12 months of supervised internship in India, provided your course meets the FMGL Regulations, 2021.
  • Other countries: USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia) and equivalent examinations each set their own eligibility rules — check them with the regulator, not with a university or an agent.

Student life

Practicalities that matter more than campus life right now:

  • Ukrainian airspace is closed to civil aviation. EASA's Conflict Zone Information Bulletin CZIB-2022-01R14, revised 24 July 2026, advises operators not to operate in Ukrainian airspace, including landings and departures, until 31 January 2027 unless reviewed earlier. You would reach Lviv overland, usually through Poland.
  • Foreign students must hold medical insurance for the whole period of study under Ukrainian law.
  • The temporary residence permit has a hard deadline of 15 working days before your visa expires, which is why LNMU tells applicants to arrive well in advance.
  • Check your own government's current travel advice for Ukraine before booking anything.

Lviv National Medical University (LNMU Lviv) — frequently asked questions

What is the tuition fee at LNMU for 2026/2027?

Under LNMU's published payment schedule for foreigners and stateless persons, English-medium Medicine (I2) is US$5,500 for one academic year and US$33,000 for the whole period of study. The same programme in Ukrainian is US$4,500 a year and US$27,000 in total. The schedule also shows higher “individual programme” rates of US$6,500 a year and US$39,000 in total for English-medium Medicine, so ask which applies to you before you sign.

How much does the LNMU hostel cost?

US$80 per month per person under the 2026/2027 payment schedule. An older hostel leaflet on the same university site still quotes US$65 per month, so confirm the current rate in writing. Hostel places are allocated competitively, first come first served and subject to availability, under an annual contract.

Is NEET compulsory for Indian students at LNMU?

Yes. LNMU's admission rules for foreigners state that Indian entrants are admitted to Ukrainian medical universities on condition of a certificate confirming successful completion of NEET. Separately, a valid NEET-UG qualifying score is what makes you eligible to register in India after a foreign medical degree.

How long is the MBBS course at LNMU?

LNMU states the period of training for I2 Medicine as 6 years, leading to a Master's degree with the professional qualification of Doctor of Medicine. The internship is a separate postgraduate stage in Ukraine, not the final year of the degree.

What entrance exams does LNMU set?

Entrance examinations are taken after you arrive in Lviv, in chemistry and in the language of instruction (English or Ukrainian). LNMU publishes materials for the entrance exams on its Faculty of Foreign Students pages.

How do I get an invitation and a visa for LNMU?

Email your passport and secondary education certificate with transcripts to the Faculty of Foreign Students for a preliminary recommendation, then apply for an electronic invitation through Ukraine's official portal apply.studyinukraine.gov.ua, searching for SNPE “Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University”. The invitation is valid for up to six months and is the basis for the student visa. After arrival and payment you register with the State Migration Service for a temporary residence permit, at least 15 working days before your visa expires.

Is it practical to travel to Lviv to study right now?

Ukraine is at war. Ukrainian airspace is closed to civil aviation under EASA bulletin CZIB-2022-01R14, currently until 31 January 2027, so there are no commercial flights and you would travel overland, usually through Poland. Lviv is in western Ukraine but has been struck during the war. Ask LNMU in writing where teaching and clinical rotations physically take place and what shelter provision exists, and check your own government's travel advice before booking.

Does LNMU teach online?

LNMU does not publish a current statement on the balance between in-person and online teaching. This matters: the NMC has published notices on foreign medical graduates who studied online, including one dated 18 March 2026 on compensating online study with physical onsite training at the foreign institution. Ask LNMU in writing, for your intake, and read the current notices at nmc.org.in.

What extra charges does LNMU publish?

Making up practical, laboratory and seminar classes missed without a valid reason costs 60 UAH per academic hour for professionally oriented disciplines, 45 UAH for natural sciences and 30 UAH for humanities and social-economic disciplines; an academic transcript costs 33 UAH per page. Medical insurance for the whole period of study is compulsory and is not included in tuition.

Is LNMU approved by the NMC?

No foreign medical university is “NMC approved” — the Commission states that it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions. What decides whether you can register in India is whether your course meets the FMGL Regulations, 2021, followed by the screening examination and 12 months of supervised internship in India. Check the current position at nmc.org.in and confirm the course details with LNMU in writing before you apply.
